The ideal time to visit all four Dhams. Weather is pleasant, roads are open, and all facilities are available. Expect large crowds.

Post-monsoon season with clear skies and breathtaking Himalayan views. Less crowded than May-June. Highly recommended.

Monsoon season. Temples are open but risk of landslides, road closures, and flash floods is high. Not recommended for first-time visitors.

Significance

Yamunotri is the source of the sacred Yamuna River. A dip in the hot kund here is believed to wash away sins and grant moksha.

Mythology & Legend

According to legend, Sage Asit Muni had his ashram here. Goddess Yamuna is the daughter of Sun God Surya and sister of Yamraj (death god). Taking a dip in the Yamuna river is said to free one from the fear of death.

Significance

Gangotri is the origin of the holy Ganges. Bathing here is believed to cleanse all sins. It is where King Bhagirath meditated to bring the Ganga to earth.

Mythology & Legend

King Bhagirath performed severe penance here to bring down the Ganges from heaven to liberate the souls of his 60,000 ancestors. Lord Shiva received the Ganga in his matted locks to break her fall.

Significance

Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas โ€“ the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva. The temple was built by the Pandavas and restored by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.

Mythology & Legend

After the battle of Kurukshetra, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva to get his blessings. Shiva eluded them by taking the form of a bull. When caught by Bhima, only the hump remained at Kedarnath; other body parts appeared at the Panch Kedar sites.

Significance

Badrinath is one of the four Dhams established by Adi Shankaracharya. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams and is believed to be the place where Lord Vishnu performed penance.

Mythology & Legend

Lord Vishnu meditated here in the form of Badrinarayan under the Badri (jujube) tree. Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree to shield him from rain and cold, giving the place its name.
